A broker comparison is useful when it shows costs, markets, the platform and the provider. It is not proof that one firm is suitable, or that a trade will work.
Read the scope before the ranking
A comparison is only as useful as its scope. Which brokers are included, in which countries, and for which products. A table of forex brokers does not describe a share-dealing account. A list aimed at one country does not describe firms that will not accept clients from another. If the scope is missing, the rest of the page is hard to trust.
Be wary of a single score that collapses fees, platform quality and a firm’s disclosures into one number, unless the page explains the method. Different readers weight those factors differently. A transparent comparison shows the factors and lets the reader weigh them.
Costs
Look for spreads or commissions, and for the charges that sit around them: financing on leveraged positions, currency conversion, withdrawal fees, inactivity fees and market data. Ask whether the figures are examples or a firm’s current pricing, and as of when. Pricing changes. A comparison should not be read as a live quote.
The cheapest line is not automatically the relevant one. A narrow spread on a product the reader does not trade does not help. Match the cost line to the markets and the account type under consideration.
Markets, platform and provider
Check which instruments are actually offered, and whether they are the instrument the reader expects. Share dealing, spread betting, contracts for difference, futures and cryptoasset trading are different products with different risks. The platform section should cover order types, charts, research and whether the tools exist on the devices the reader uses.
The provider section should make the firm identifiable: the legal entity, the disclosures it publishes, and any stated limits on who can open an account. Commercial relationships between a comparison site and a broker, where they exist, should be stated. A comparison that hides them is incomplete.
What the page cannot prove
A broker comparison does not show that a reader will be accepted as a client, that a particular trade is appropriate, or that future prices will move in their favour. Trading and investing involve risk. Losses are possible, and leverage can increase them.
